Dip a cotton swab (Q-Tip) into rubbing alcohol and clean the three metal rollers inside the trackball mechanism. Give the alcohol 2-3 minutes to evaporate. If that doesn't work, try WD-40 on the ends of the rollers. The rollers should turn easily, but should not slip when they come in contact with the trackball. So make sure to wipe off the parts of the rollers that come in contact with the trackball itself. Use a q-tip if you can't reach the rollers. It has been suggested (though not tested) to use plastidip on the ball to increase friction.
If cleaning the trackball does not restore performance, please contact us at support@AlphaGrip.com.
(Top of Page)
Adjusting trackball speed
Windows
In Windows, all mouse settings apply to all connected pointing devices. I immediately wanted to remap the keys for a couple of Mac-specific reasons: it is almost impossible to press command-c and command-v for copy/paste. I decided to move backspace and enter to the left thumb, and put C and V in their place (putting several common control and command keys on the right thumb). At the same time, I also wanted to put L and Y on the bottom and swap it with the period, comma, colon, etc.
I initially tried to use Ukelele, but it for some reason was not saving the Unicode character codes I pasted in (I verified by opening the files in a text editor). I then created my own key mappings manually, in said text editor... time consuming, but I got it to be just how I wanted it. In the end, I had it 99% working in TextEdit, except that the backspace key would not send c as I had remapped it to, rather it persisted in sending backspace. Even worse, in my 'real' editor (BBEdit, none of the non-character keys worked at all... some remappings worked, but not Enter, Backspace, Tab, etc.
<de

Function Keys Should Work as a Press not only a Lock
Crtl-Alt-Fn keys are very important in linux. You use these keys to switch between terminals. The current way that the alphagrip is designed makes it difficult to do this quickly. A 'press' instead of a 'lock' for the fn key might make things easier. Many games need Fn keys, such as Deus Ex and its sequel. This keys need to be accessed fairly quickly. Again, a press fn key instead of a lock fn key might make this easier. Perhaps an even better solution would be to have controlling keys (crtl, alt, win, esc,fn and so on) to default as 'press' keys, but when you press them in combination with a green or red key, they 'lock.' Just a thought.
From: Yary Date: Fri, Nov 9 2007
I posted a similar suggestion to google groups. Below is a photo of a "desk stand" (inspired by Doug Sims' EasyStand), which was made by first wrapping 1/16th" string and then duct tape around the top 5" of the AlphaGrip's USB cable. The reinforced cable props up the AlphaGrip when you put it down and pick it up while lowering the risk of damaging the cable, which may result when the Grip's weight is supported by a cable that has not been reinforced.
Our manufacturer is looking into the feasibility of reinforcing the top portion of the USB cable (for future production runs) to duplicate the Easy Stand's functionality.
(Top of Page)
Easy Stand III
From: CarlosQuesada Date: Aug 20 2007
I grabbed a good ol' 2HB lead pencil made of wood, cut it up and sticked it in the bottom screw holes.
